Biblical Studies
For biblical studies this year, we have been learning about the New Testament. The main assignment was to do a research project regarding the synoptic gospels which are Matthew, Mark and Luke. Those three books are somehow having the same content which is why I also chose that assignment as the sample for digiport. It was a tough assignment because the research was not from the internet, it was rather from the Bible.

Knowledge and Understanding
For each event, read the parallel passages, and answer the following questions: 1) what event is described in the passages?, 2) how are the parallel passages similar?, 3) how are the parallel passages different?, and 4) how does Jesus Christ relate to the event?.
1. Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38
1) The generations of Christ.
2) Both are Christ ancestors
3) One of His father Joseph and the other is from the mother Mary
4) In Matthew, it connects to Christ to David the King and Luke it connects to Christ to Adam and the first man.
The event described is the generations or the ancestors of Jesus Christ because in the end, David is related. They are similar because the main point is that it is about the generations and they are different because the part where Luke says it was the continuation of the one that Matthew wrote.
2. Matthew 2:19-23 and Luke 2:39-52
1) The Life of Jesus
2) Both was about the life of Jesus
3) The first pasage was when He was born while the second pasage was when He grew up and gain His wisdom.
4) It relates to Jesus because it is how He learn to be who He really became which is our Saviour.
The event in those two sections of from the Bible is when Jesus grew up. What Matthew wrote was how Herod died and Jesus then was born while what Luke wrote about was how He grew up and increased his wisdom.
3. Matthew 3:13-17 and Mark 1:9-11 and Luke 3:21-22
1) Basically it was about how Jesus got baptized
2) Both was about the baptism of Jesus Christ.
3) The first passage about when he asked John to baptize him in Galilea while the second passage when God spoke to Jesus during His baptism.
4) Both is relevant to Jesus Christ because it is during the baptism of Jesus.
4. Matthew 4:1-11 and Mark 1:12-12 and Luke 4:1-13
1) The event was when Satan tempted Jesus while He was fasting for forty days. Satan was tempting Jesus to eat and tempering Him.
2) The passages are similar because most important parts are writen similary, both is about the story of how satan tempted Jesus.
3) How the passages are different are that they are writen differently, Matthew explains the part where he lured Jesus to the temple during the middle of the chapter while Luke explains that part in the end.
4) Both are relevant to Jesus because it is about how satan tempted Jesus during his forty day fasting. The content of both passages are the same but the difference is the order so both passages must be relevent to Jesus.
5. Matthew 8:14-17 and Mark 1:29-34 and Luke 4:38-41
1) The event among the passages is when Simon’s mother in law got really sick and Jesus ordered the fever to go away. As soon as the sun set, all sorts of people asked Jesus to cure their diseases and He cured them all.
2) The passages are similar to each other because the content are really similar they are both about how Jesus became a healer to the people. It is how Jesus was recognized as the healer.
3) The only different thing is that the order of each passage are arranged differently then the other because the writer of each book is different so the order won’t be the same.
4) Both passages are definitely relevent to Jesus because it is how Jesus healed the sick and the only different thing is the order of the passage.
6. Matthew 8:23-27 and Mark 4:36-41 and Luke 8:22-25
1) The whole three passages was when Jesus was with the disciples on a boat trying to sail to the other side of a lake. While sailing, Jesus Himself took a nap, during that time there was a huge storm and the disciples called Him. They told Jesus they were all gonna die, Jesus asked them “Where is your faith?” He then asked the storm to be queit and so it did. The disciples were then amazed because even the storms obeyed Him.
2) The pasages are definitely relevent to each other because the three pasages are about the story when Jesus calmed down the storm. The end of the three pasages ends the same way. It states something about “Even the storms obey Him.” It is the same for the three versions in the New Internasional Version.
3) The only thing that makes it different is the choice of words and the order of the sentences because the writer of each book is different, it is obvious the order and choice of vocabulary won’t be the same.
4) The three pasages are relevent to Jesus because they all are about how the disciples recognized Him as someone greater. What I mean by that is that the disciples recognized Him better because Jesus was able to control the storms.
7. Matthew 10:1-15 and Mark 6:7-13 and Luke 9:1-6
1) The three pasages are mainly about Jesus asking His disciples to scatther around the nation to spread the word of God. He asked them not to bring anything, no money, no bag, not even a shirt. All He asked was to bring a pair of sandals. For each city they would encounter, Jesus asked them to stay at a faithful family’s house, He asked them to stay in that house until they would leave the house. If they couldn’t find a house, they should leave the place. The end of the passages explains how the disciples baptized lots of people, how they drove away demons and healed the weak. There are extra bits of information such as mentioning the 12 disciples itself.
2) The passages are definitey similar to each other because the three books are talking about the same thing. The three pasages explains about how Jesus asked His disciples to scatter around the nation to spread the word of God. He asked them all to travel without anything, no bag, money only to bring a pair of sandals and a pair of clothes. Jesus gave clear instructions to His disciples.
3) For these three pasages, there are differences. The differences are the order information writen because the writer of each book is different which is why the choice of words and order will alter. But from the three books, Matthew writes with more detail then Mark and Luke. In the passage in Matthew, it is writen clearly and has more detail. Matthew explains who are Jesus’s discipes, he described the all of the orders from Jesus and described what the disciples actually did. While Luke and Mark described the passage briefly but has the same meaning as Matthew.
4) The three passages are definitely related to Jesus because it is when Jesus commanded his disciples to spread the word of God around the nation. It was when He commanded His disciples to go on a journey to spread the word of God, so there will be more followers of God.
8. Matthew 12:38-41 and Luke 11:29-32
1) The event was when the people questioned Jesus to prove a sign of who He truly is. But what Jesus replied about saying that this wicked generation is asking for a sign? Jesus then said something about Jonah because Jonah was the sign for the Ninevites and Jesus is the sign for the current generation. If the Ninevites repented because of the preaching of Jonah, then the current generation has something greater which is the Son of God. The passage also described about Solomon because he was the sign of wisdom and Jesus was even greater then Solomon.
2) Both passages are paralel to each because both passages described the story of when the people asked a sign of Jesus, but Jesus replied not to give any sign because there were already signs given from God from the past such as Jonah with the Ninevites and the wise Solomon.
3) The difference is that Luke writes with words easier to understand then Matthew. Luke also writes with more detail. While Matthew uses advanced sentences which I find hard to understand. But both content are the same, except for the order of the words because the writers are different.
4) Both passages are relevent to Jesus because both pasages are about how the people questioned Jesus of His sign. But Jesus replied that they don’t need a sign, they were plenty of signs in the past such as Jonah and Solomon, they were great people and right now, there is someone greater which is Jesus.
9. Matthew 14:14-21 and Mark 6:30-44 and Luke 9:10-17
1) The event in the three passages is basically the story when Jesus fed the 5000. But in the passage, it doesn’t say 5000 people, it says 5000 men which means that there were more people because the men had wives and children. But He was still able to feed the people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. It is impresive and it is a prove that Jesus does miracles.
2) The passages are same to each other because each one talks about how the disciples wanted the people to buy food but Jesus asked them not to. Jesus then asked them to give him the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Jesus then spreaded the food all over the people, in the end everybody was satisfied. There was even leftovers.
3) From what I see, all three pasages are writen very carefully because this is one the miracles that the writers have seen. The only difference I have seen from the three passages are the order of the story, because the writer of each passage is a different person, it is not weird if the order is different.
4) All pasages are relevent to Jesus because the story is about how Jesus performed a miracle which was feeding the 5000 men with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
10. Matthew 14:22-33 and Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:15-21
1) These three pasages are when the disciples saw Jesus walk on water. I was actually a lake though, the story started while Jesus was praying on a mountain. When it was getting late, the boat which the disciples were in had already drifted away. While the disciples were on the watch, Jesus suddenly appeared walking on the lake. The disciples were then astonished. The disciples assumed that Jesus was like a ghost so Peter wanted prove from Him. Jesus then asked Peter to step outside of the boat, then Peter did. For a brief second, Peter managed to walk on water but then he doubted that he would sink and he did. Jesus then helped him back to the boat and said “Why did you doubt?” The disciples then worshipped him and said that He was truly the son of God.
2) The three pasages are similar to each other eventhough the third one isn’t part of the synoptic gospels, the content and the message are the same. The main point to the three messages is the story of when Jesus was able to walk on water. It was when Peter was able to walk for a brief second but then sank.
3) Eventhough the content of each passage is the same, there are some differences which I notice. The difference is that Matthew writes it completely. What I mean is that Mark and John didn’t explain the story of when Peter also walked on water for some seconds, while Matthew explain it with great detail. This means that when the event happened, Matthew really thought of it as a great incident, like a miracle.
4) The whole passages are related to Jesus Christ because the three passages are about the story when Jesus walked on water in front of the disciples. This was maybe a test to the disciples from Jesus to test their faith and in the end the disciples obeyed and worshipped Jesus even more.
11. Matthew 16:13-16 and Mark 8:27-30 and Luke 9:18-21
1) The event of these three passages is about when Jesus asked the people of Philippi of who is the son of man, the people answered Elijah, John the Baptist and other prophets. But as soon as Jesus asked His disciples, Peter immediatly answered “You are the Messiah, Son of God.”
2) These passages are relevent to each other because it is about what the people knew about the son of God and it turns out that the only people who knew during the time was His disciples because the passage says that majority of Philippi people didn’t know.
3) There isn’t actually much of a difference in the three passages, the only difference there is in the three passage must be the order and the choice of words. But that is a definite difference because the author of the three passages are different.
4) The three passages are definitely relevent to Jesus Christ because it was what the people and disciples thought about who the son of God really is which is actually Jesus himself.
12. Matthew 17:1-13 and Mark 9:2-13 and Luke 9:28-36
1) The event from the three pasages is “The Transfiguration.” Honestly, I didn’t know there was such a event. But the three pasages talked about how Peter, John and James were going up to the mountain to pray. When they were there, they saw Moses and Elijah talking to Jesus. Peter then offered the three great people for shelter, but then while he was speaking a great cloud appeared and covered them. Then a voice came out of it “ This is my Son whom I have chosen, listen to Him.” The disciples then didn’t spoke a word about it afterwards.
2) The three passages are certainly relevant to each other because the three passages are all talking about the transfiguration. It is the story of how Peter, John and James heard the voice of God. Actually is was a great cloud that covered them but I believe that it was God. It is also about how Moses and Elijah getting resurrected.
3) The only difference from the three passages is the order because the author of each passage is a different man. Also, the choice of words and the amount of detail each person would write for each passage will be different because nobody is the same.
4) The three passages are definitely relevant to Jesus Christ because it is the transfiguration. It is the story of how Moses and Elijah were resurrected for a while. It was how the disciples heard God’s voice.
13. Matthew 17:22-23 and Mark 9:30-32 and Luke 9:43-45
1) The event from the three passages was when Jesus predicted His second death. The three passages were very short though. While Jesus and the disciples were in Galilee, Jesus then told them that He would die in the hands of man. The disciples were confused and didn’t dare to ask anymore.
2) The three articles are relevant to each other because the three of them has the heading “Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time.” It definitely talks about how Jesus told His disciples that He will die in the hands of man.
3) There is almost no difference at all in the three passages because each is very short and summarized by each author The only thing would be the choice of words which the author has chosen for each passage.
4) The three passages are relevant to Jesus because it was how He predicted His death for the second time to His disciples. It is very essential to the story of Jesus because it gave a sign to the disciples.
14. Matthew 21:12-17 and Mark 11:15-18 and Luke 19:45-47
1) The event from the passages is the story of when Jesus went to the temple courts and saw like a market there. Jesus then began driving out shops and flipping tables. He said “‘My house will be a house of prayer’ [a]; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.” Everyday Jesus then spread His word in the temple, but the elder priests disliked Him and wanted to find a way to kill Him.
2) The three passages are relevant to each other because the three of them talked about how Jesus went mad and forced the market and the money changers out of the temple. It was also the beginning of how the elders became to hate Him and wanted to kill Him.
3) The only difference is that Matthew writes in more detail, besides having the heading, Matthew describes some dialogue that isn’t explained in Mark and Luke. Other than that, the only change would be the order and choice of words because the author is different.
4) Yes this is very important to Jesus Christ because this story is very essential to the bible, it is about how He drove away the sellers in the temple and how the elders began to despise Him.
15. Matthew 22:34-40 and Mark 12:28-34 and Luke 10:25-28
1) The story from the three passages is about the story when one of the Pharisees questioned Him about the most important commandment. Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ That is the first and greatest commandment The second one is ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and prophets should hang on to this.
2) The passages are similar to each other definitely because all three are talking about the greatest commandment from the ten. It is how the Pharisees figured out which is the best commandment and Jesus answered with two.
3) The only difference from the three passages is the third passage, somehow the heading for the third passage is “The Parable of The Good Samaritan.” But I guess that the story of the parable is told in the next verses because the passage only talks about the greatest commandment.
4) The only connection with Jesus Christ is that the story itself is about questioning Him about the greatest commandment. It is definitely relevant to Him because He was the one who answered the question of the Pharisees.
Reflection:
1) Keeping in mind the theme each author emphasized and the different audience to whom they were writing, and after reading the above parallel passages, how would you respond to someone who claims that the synoptic gospels prove that the Bible is in error (wrong) because they contain contradictory information?
If I would find a person who claims that the bible e is incorrect because of the synoptic gospels, I would explain that the three books may seem similar. But the synoptic gospels are actually different because the authors of each book are different, the content may be the same but there is a difference in detail. To be able to fully understand the story, you should read the whole synoptic gospels.
2) What do you believe concerning the truth of these parallel accounts of the life of Christ and His ministry?
Yes I do believe in the synoptic gospels and the life of Christ and His minisptry because the story in the synoptic is very important. It tells about how Jesus spread His word and the story of His life. If th e information wasn’t important, they wouldn’t have made the event in three books. Before reading the synoptic gospels, there was some parts that I didn’t even know such as the transfiguration. But now I know a further understanding of it.

Reflection to Task
The task which I have inserted is seen very long because there was two parts in this assignment. The first on was about researching regarding the synoptic gospels through passages from the Bible. Mr Jared actually gave those passages which made the task much easier. He gave 15 numbers , which had 3 passages each which took a long time for me to solve. I put it as "solve" because to figure out the research, it would like a riddle. The second part in this assignment is the reflection part, it is actually asking about my opinion about the synoptic gospels. For this assignment, I haven't received my grade so I don't know my score. However, I have a feeling that I could have done better in the reflection part because I didn't really understand the questions. But I tried my best.
The IB learner profile which I have learned from this assignment is being a thinker and a reflective person because I had to think about the answers for each passage comparison. If you have read over the assignment which I don't consider, it is found that the question are difficult to answer. The reflective part is the second part of the assignment which asked me to reflect.
The fundamental concept which i have learned from this assignment is holistic learning because that means about learning about God and this is biblical studies which clearly describes about holistic learning.
