Mistaken Identity
Adapted from the original story: Sangkuriang Dan Dayang Sumbi
Ju Hee: Narrator and Spirit
Aditya: Sangkuriang
Nick: Boar, Cashier at Starbucks, Spirit
Permata: Dayang Sumbi
Tiana: Narrator and Spirit
Ju Hee: Once, not so long ago...
(Everyone, except Sangkuriang, freezes
Aditya: It is I, Sangkuriang! I have gone hunting with my boar today to find us an animal for dinner tonight.
(Everyone, except Sangkuriang, unfreezes)
Aditya: Now Nick, my boar, do as I say and catch me a wild beast
Nick: Why should I?
Aditya: Because... Hey, wait a minute! You’re a boar, you can’t talk! I must be dreaming! (Rubs his head)
Nick: You have underestimated me, master!
Aditya: Fine, I need time to recover from my shock. Now my boar, go hunt a wild beast and bring it back to me by noon!
Nick: What the... so you’re just going to sit here while I go hunting and do the dirty work?
Aditya: Hey! First of all, boars aren’t even supposed to be able to talk, so keep your mouth shut unless I tell you to do otherwise. Second of all, you may not speak to your master like that! You are a very impolite boar!
Nick: I am your father, Sangkuriang... You must obey me!
Aditya: Father?! (Laughs out loud) Do you actually think I am blind? A boar like you... as my father? How preposterous!
Nick: Son, you have made a foolish mistake, you will be cursed from this day forward: you will bare a hideous mark on your head!
Cursed be the day you were--
Aditya: Hey, what’s with all the cursing? Who are you, anyway, a sorcerer? Now, shut your mouth or I will shoot you instead of hunting for a beast. My mother and I will eat you for dinner, terrible boar!
Nick: I’d rather die than live with you one more second!
Aditya: So be it! (Shoots Nick, drags Nick off the stage)
(Freezes)
Tiana: Meanwhile at Sangkuriang’s house, his mother was working on their dinner. Only, she needed the beef Sangkuriang was supposed to bring back much earlier that day to complete the 2 servings she was preparing.
Permata: Where is Sangkuriang? He was supposed to be back here 4 and a half hours ago! Sangkuriang, Sangkuriang... Where are you? (Walks back and forth several times, pauses)
Aditya: (Makes knocking sound)
Permata: Sangkuriang, that better be you!
Aditya: This is the beef you have requested, Mother!
Permata: Well it’s about time! What on earth have you been doing all day? You were supposed to return home 4 and a half hours ago!
Aditya: Blame that boar you sent with me, it was such a pain!
Permata: Okay, ‘blame the boar’… Anyway, how would you like your dinner? Boiled, steamed… Fried? Or…
Aditya: Why can’t we just go to McDonald’s, mum? Like a normal family.
Permata: Sangkuriang...
Aditya: Oh, okay. You might not like McDonald’s. How about we stop by Pizza Hut or... or American Grill? Or...
Permata: No, Sangkuriang dear, one day you’ll understand. I am not an ordinary human being; I have contact with the spirits. My husband, your father... That reminds me… Hey, sweetie, where’s the boar who went hunting with you, your father?
Aditya: What?!
Permata: I know I should have told you earlier, but the boar is actually your father who was cursed by the spirits for...
Aditya: You are meaning to tell me that that boar was my father?
Permata: I know it’s a lot to take in at first but...
Aditya: Mum, that boar... my “father” is what I brought you to eat... His body is our dinner... I was so annoyed by him, so I shot him... Oh my gosh... what have I done?! (Falls to the ground with his face buried in his hands)
Permata: You killed your own father? (Hits Sangkuriang on the head with a pan)
Aditya: Mother... I...
Permata: Out! Out! Never return!
Aditya: (runs off the stage)
Ju Hee: Many years past and Sangkuriang grew to become a handsome man; however, as his father the boar had cursed him before he died, he had to bare a mark on his head, which his mother had caused to appear by hitting him on the head with a pan. The spirits also threatened to bestow a punishment on both Sangkuriang and his mother if they ever spent time together before Sangkuriang turned 20.
Tiana: Everything was fine, until one day Sangkuriang left his settlement in search of a famous singer he would later invite to his 16th birthday party. The celebrity would serve as a special guest who would perform for he and his friends. After boarding a large ship and returning to his hometown, he met his mother, Dayang Sumbi. He did not recognize her for she was still young and beautiful.
Ju Hee: For after her husband's death she realized that she had to make money and work for a living. So Dayang Sumbi became a celebrity whose music topped the iTunes charts in over 60 countries.
Permata: (Removes sunglasses she is wearing, poses for the audience)
Ju Hee: It all started when Dayang Sumbi was at Starbucks one afternoon. She ordered a double cappuccino latte. When she took the item she had purchased off the counter:
Nick: That would be $13.99, Ma’am.
Permata: (Hands Nick some money)
Nick: Thank you.
Permata: (Lowers sunglasses to a position under her eyes) No problem!
Nick: Oh. My. Gosh. It’s Dayang Sumbi! Didn’t you win American Idol at the beginning of the year? Please, my daughter is a huge fan of yours; please sign your autograph… (Holds up a piece of paper)
Permata: Oh... Uhh…
(Nick and Permata freeze)
Ju Hee: Permata ran away before Nick could ask for her autograph.
(Nick and Permata unfreeze)
Pemata: Move! Excuse me! (Crashes into Aditya and spills water all over his shirt) Ooh. I’m so sorry. Let me dry your shirt for you. (Trys to dry Aditya’s shirt)
Tiana: After cleaning up the mess, Sangkuriang sat down with Dayang Sumbi and talks about his mission in finding someone famous to sing at his 16 birthday.
Aditya: It’s a huge celebration... it’ll mean a lot to me, I hear that you are a very famous singer, please, would you come to my party and sing for my friends and I?
Permata: Considering that I spilt a hot cappuccino latte on you before, I guess I owe you. Sure, I’ll sing at your birthday.
Tiana: What the two people did not know was that Dayang Sumbi had given birth to Sangkuriang decades before. She had raised him and banished him from her house, but the spirits blessed her for her husband the dog’s sake with a gift of eternal youth.
Ju Hee: The time came for Sangkuriang’s 16th birthday party on the 15th of May. As soon as Dayang Sumbi finished singing, three spirits appeared.
Nick and Ju Hee and Tiana: (Join each other on the stage)
Tiana: You have done evil, Dayang Sumbi and Sangkuriang. We had an agreement many years ago that you may not meet until after Sangkuriang’s 20th birthday. Come, for the spirits have decided upon your punishment. We have gone out of our way to come here from the opposite side of the country.
Ju Hee, Tiana and Nick: (Pull Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi to the middle of the stage)
Ju Hee: So Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi faced their punishment. They were forced to build a ship that they spirits would later use to return in to their original dwelling place, on the opposite side of the country. The ship had to be completed by noon.
Tiana: So they, Dayang Sumbi and Sangkuriang. Worked very hard on the ship they were asked to create.
Nick: When they had almost completed building the ship…
Ju Hee: The spirits turned Dayang Sumbi to stone. Finding this unfair, Sangkuriang cried out and in his anger he kicked the ship he and his mother had worked so hard on so that it was turned upside down.
Nick: Unpleased with his attitude, the spirits turned him to stone as well.
Tiana: I know it’s not quite a happy ending... But, we’ve reached the end of our tale
The ship that was turned upside down is now a famous mountain. It is referred to as “Tangkuban Perahu” because of its unusual shape.Nick: The moral of this story is: Diligently follow the instructions of elders. Always be honest for dishonesty and anger lead to misfortune, but honesty will bring you a great reward.
Reflection:
For this task, I am glad that my group and I am able to accomplish this edited story with my fellow classmates. We brainstormed ideas and piled it up into one. As soon as we finished this, we made a script and turned it into a drama. I could improve by editing the vocabulary and put more elements of a story. But I think I did a pretty good job.
