End of Fieldtrip Reflection
There are many things that can be gained from the fieldtrip to Medan. One important value which we all gained would be reflection skills. Reflection skills include seeking out constructive criticism, reflecting on received information, and keeping of learning journals/portfolios. All three were used during the fieldtrip to Medan. During our time at the places we visited, I asked questions to the man in charge. They weren’t that constructive but when I received an answer, I reflected on it. I wanted to understand the answer to the question and deepened my understanding. Sometimes my question got answered and it made sense. But there were times where the question led to another question, and I had to ask more. All this is part of reflection because I reflect back everything I learn something new. Towards the end of each day in Medan, we always had to write a reflection in our journals. This is also improving my reflecting skills. I continually wrote on the journals about my experience and how I felt in those different days.
Medan is totally a different city compared to Jakarta. It doesn’t have high tall buildings, the food is quite different, and the culture is different. Therefore there had to be some adapting to do. First of all is the food, the food in Medan is spicy. I couldn’t eat the food there and I couldn’t adapt to the spicy food. Which meant on some meals I didn’t eat much. During the visit, the Batak people said some Batakense words. In the end we learned some of those words and said it to them. Words like horas will probably be in my mind forever.
The best method for sustainibility is probably ignorance. When we have problems, especially if we have trouble adapting to culture or environment, it is better to ignore. I ignored most of the trouble which was going on while I was at Medan. For example the rooms, some of them were quite horrible and scary. Yet I just ignored it and just focused on sleeping. The same case with the food, I ignored the spicy food and decided not to eat much. This is why ignorance is sometimes not always a negative value.
From the whole fieldtrip, lots of experience has been gained and it can be used in my daily life. I have sustained countless things during the fieldtrip and I can sustain more things back home. For example with friends and family. They are people who can make me angry, people who can make me annoyed. From the fieldtrip to Medan, I can learn to sustain the anger. I can also sustain other emotions that can make me into a bad person. By sustaining all that, I am also learning to persevere and that is a good value.
