Barbarians
For Humanities, we learned about barbarians. THe Huns, Franks, Goths and Vandal.
Huns:
The Huns are a group of mysterious people who reigned over Europe. They fought the Europeans as though they had a vengeance with God. People say that because the Chinese constructed the wall, the Huns went away from the East with anger. In the fifth century, the Huns attacked the Roman Empire when they were weak, when Rome was divided. The Romans fought hard, they exchanged ambassadors, son of nobles as hostages and even paying tribute.
One of the hostages is Etuis, one of the greatest Roman general. He learned the way of the Hun and found out knowledge of the Hun. Eventually he had to face the leader, Attila the Hun. At 448 AD, the Huns with Attila as their leader made an empire that started from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. They got 2,000 pounds of gold from the Easter part of Roman per year.
In 450, the Emperor’s sister offered she to be married to Attila. But the emperor refused of such thing and the Romans and the Huns had war. But the Romans weren’t hasty and didn’t finish their opponents. But that led the Huns to be able to escape and to prepare for more battle. The end of the Huns was from a disease which is malaria. Attila died because of it, and so did the other Huns fall.
The Huns have culture and arts that is very similar like the Chinese because they were from the Chinese area. The writing and the pictures are very similar.
What I think about the Huns to the Romans is that the Huns were very furious about them having to leave their land. That is why they are also angry when they arrived at Rome.
Goths:
Goths originated in what is now called southern Sweden (Stanza). The Goths culture originated from northern Continental Europe. Archaeological evidence shows that the Goths did migrate from northeastern Europe to Scythia. They migrated to the north of Black Sea during A.D. 100s. The Goths reigned over the countries of Europe such as Italy, Gotland and others. During the 200s they attacked the northeastern frontiers of the Roman Empire.
Some Goths settled in Dacia (which is now part of Romania and Hungary) in 272. During the 300s, the Goths split into two tribes. Goths who are in Dacia are called Visigoths which are in the West. Well the one in the east is called Ostrogoths, they are slaves to the Huns.
In 376, the Visigoths were threatened by the Huns from the East. They crossed the Danube River, and took shelter in the Roman province of Pannonia. But they soon rebelled. In 378, they defeated a Roman army at Adrianople and killed the Roman Emperor Valens. (http://www.genreonline.net/Barbarians_History_Channel.html)
The Goths developed hatred to the Romans since the Goths were originally slaves to the Romans. They grew furious and rebelled with the Romans, but the Huns who also hate the Romans became jealous and the Huns and the Goths had a little quarrel. But the hatred of both tribes led to the end of the Roman Empire. (http://www.genreonline.net/Barbarians_History_Channel.html)
Vandals:
The vandals were a Germanic group of people belonging to the family of the East Germans. They are known as taking riches of the Romans and weakening the empire. The Goth leader was called Theodoric the Great, king of Ostrogoths was married with the vandals to be allies as well as allying with the Huns and a little to the Franks. The vandals were settled at Elbe and Vistula. At the time of the Marcomannic War in 166-81 AD they lived in a place that is now called Silesia.
During the 3rd century when the Roman Empire was in crisis with many powerful enemies at their borders, the Vandals and their ally which are called the Sarmatians, invaded the Roman territory. In about AD 271 the Roman Emperor Aurelian was asked to protect the middle course of the Danube against them for the Vandals were strong.
Vandals accepted Arian Christianity during the Ruling of Emperor Valens in the AD 360’s. Before this, there were two branches of the Vandal Confederacy: which were the Siling Vandals in the north and the Asding Vandals in the south. They didn’t affect much of the Roman Empire but they had an attack in the Jerusalem church and destroyed it, also for a while Christianity was not allowed. The Vandals left limited culture and tradition but there anger and vengeance to the Romans are huge. The Vandals are from Germanic tribes which is why there tradition and beliefs are similar the Franks.
The vandals also killed countless Romans and weakened the empire.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandals)
Franks:
The Franks now are known as the Germanic tribes and became the French. The Franks attacked former wealthy Romans and inhabited the land. They became the strongest Germanic tribe. The Franks created the best barbarian kingdom after West Rome collapsed. The Franks was the one who finished the remaining of the empire after being weakened by Goths and the Huns.
The Merovingian dynasty was a family who controlled the Franks. The first ruler was Choleric, father of Clovis. But the Merovingian loss control and the Franks was led by the Carolingians. The ruler became King Charles Martel. But the best leader of Charlemagne, Charles the Great. He revived the arts of the kingdom and made it great. He made people into Christians and won countless battles. He became the most holy Roman Emperor at 800AD as well as the king of Frank. The Franks affected the Romans by conquering West Germany and replacing it. But some other Franks joined the Roman army. The Franks were great Christians and they could also be described as crusaders. The Franks has architecture and art like making golden cups, etc. It is called the Carolingian art. The Carolingian makes buildings and with huge pillars and fancy materials. (http://en.wikipedia.org)(http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?historyid=ab74)
