1. Did I find new reasons and methods people preserved food?
Yes from the fieldtrip, I figured out some new methods. These methods I found out by observing the traditional food that my friends and I bought. For my food personally, bika ambon, the preserving method is definitely freezing. If I freeze the food it can still be eaten when re heated. Most of the foods had different preserving methods. There were food that had the sugaring method, seasoning, and oxygen method. Most of them were in plastic packages that is why most of them had those preserving methods. However one food was different and I learned something new. It was inside a plastic package but the food was fruit coated with sugar. Usually fruits isn’t preserved like this. However the mango had the sugaring preservation method and I found that interesting.
Those are what I discovered while I was in Medan. I have also researched new methods to preserve food. The methods I have found are jellying and vacuum packing. Jellying is basically effecting the moisture level of the food. It adds more sugar rather than water. The food will then be more dry. The second method is vacuum packing, It is basically taking the oxygen away from the food container so it can be preserved.
2. How do I think this might be useful (*in practice, **in my studies, ***in my life)?
The knowledge I found during the fieldtrip can certainly be useful because now I know more about food preserving methods. Especially about how they are used in daily lives. I see how different food has different food preservation methods. Each of them is quite interesting like the mango food. This can be useful for my life because now I know which method to use for different foods. Like bika ambon is definitely freezing. Not to mention that my knowledge has increase. So all this is very useful.
3. How did I feel about what was done? (*Did it affect me emotionally and if so, how?
Eating Medan food was a new experience for me. It was the first time I went to Medan and the food was surprisingly delicious. The food there is similar to the food at my house. The staple food is rice and there are meat accompanying it. Some of the Medan food was spicy like the fish and chicken. However it was still delicious. There was also the traditional food like bika ambon. That was the only traditional food which I found delicious. So in conclusion I feel happy with the food in Medan.
4. What did I like or enjoy and why?
What I liked was the fish and the chicken from there. The sauce was quite delicious for both the chicken and the fish. I also liked the bika ambon because it was sweet. The cake was sweet and it aws delicious. I enjoyed those dishes.
5. What did I dislike and why?
What I disliked were the other traditional food from Medan. Food like durian pancake are really not good because I don’t like durian. It tasted horrible. Another food which I dislike were the seafood that was served because I am allergic to seafood.
6. Is there any action that I will take as a result of what was done? (*What will I do differently next time and how will I do it?)
Next time I will try to eat more food. A more variety of food because there were things traditional food which I chose not to eat. There was the bolu meranti and these food called ting ting tang tang tong tong. I didn’t try any of that. Therefore, next time I need to eat that.
7. What do I need to investigate or research further related with my next project on food preservation?
What I can research in the future on food preservation is how to preserve food that we buy from overseas. I am still confused in that matter. What if I buy salmon from Alaska, how will I be able to bring that home,. Or is it impossible to bring food from foreign countries? If there are ways, what are the preservation methods. Is it the same or different then the ones we’ve learned.
Based on research to the internet, I have found the methods for these things I have wondered. Yes it is very possible to transport food from foreign countries. There are food preservating methods. For instance the salmon can be rapped with aluminum foil. This wail it won’t go stale. There are other methods which usually involves concealing the food in a container.
